Belly BInding is healing
What is Postpartum Belly Binding?
Belly binding is a tradition in many eastern cultures. The practice involves using special knots to tie a long strip of cloth around the abdomen - sometimes after applying an herbal paste or essential oils to the abdomen - during the postpartum recovery period to support a woman's uterus and other organs after childbirth. The Bengkung style of belly binding seen here is specific to the Malaysian culture.

Benefits of Postpartum Belly Binding:
- It helps to slim the ribcage, abdomen and hips.
- Pulls in the separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) back together.
- Encourages healing from pelvic/pubic separation (a partial bind during pregnancy can be especially beneficial for pelvic support).
- Supports relaxed and stretched out muscles.
- Reduce fluid and air retention in bowels/abdomen.
- Gets rid of the "empty" feeling after childbirth.
- Nurtures the mother in a time of vulnerability and healing.
- Prevents back pain. While wearing it, you are reminded to sit and walk straight, a good antidote to the “nursing-slouch”.
- Decreases postpartum bleeding time by speeding up the process of getting rid of waste blood in a natural way.
- It’s an ancient traditional natural way of healing after birth.
- In the case of a miscarriage or still-birth, belly binding can improve emotional healing as it speeds physical healing.
- It feels good!
Belly BInding Is essential
The more I belly bind women postpartum, the more I realize how needed it is. Woman is an instinctive nurturer. She takes care of everyone around her, but rarely does she have the opportunity to be taken care of herself.
Postpartum belly binding is a ritual of nurture and healing that creates the feeling of being surrounded, loved, and noticed.
Belly binding is about more than weight loss, getting your pre-baby figure back, or even healing physically. It is about supporting your body in a time of vulnerability. It's about honoring the space of motherhood, the transition from woman to mother, mother of one to mother of many. It is about surrounding each other with the most basic and essential of human needs: acceptance and love.
When you receive belly binding, you receive warmth, understanding, and most of all, love that will lift you up in a time of vulnerability and healing.

I absolutely loved the Malaysian belly-binding! That first day postpartum before the belly binding, I found myself hunching over when I was walking because it was too uncomfortable to stand up straight. After the belly-binding, I was walking straight, and I sat up straighter while breastfeeding too. The support from the belly-binding gave me better posture, and it was more comfortable than not having it. Each day my belly got smaller and smaller, and I recovered very quickly. Thanks so much! I will definitely want to do the belly-binding again after having my next baby."
